How to tell if a tarot reading is too vague to be helpful

Hi all,

I just had my very first online tarot reading, and I’m a bit unsure about how meaningful it really was. Most of the cards drawn were positive – things like The Sun, The Empress, and The Star. The reader said it was a sign of hope and good things coming soon, which sounds nice but also pretty generic, right? The comments felt a little broad and I didn’t get a clear sense of how the cards connected to my specific situation.

I guess I’m wondering, how do you usually tell if a tarot reading is too vague to be actually useful? I’ve seen some sites mention looking at how the reader explains things, or whether their messages really ring true for you. Also, when is it just polite fluff versus actual insight? I’m thinking about maybe trying this again on a different site but want to be better at spotting red flags. Thanks!

It sounds like you got mostly major arcana cards which often point to big themes, so naturally they can seem broad. But those cards can be much more specific depending on how the reader interprets their placement and relationships within the spread.

You might try asking for a smaller spread next time, like a 3-card past-present-future, which can help focus on details. Also, sharing your question clearly with the reader helps them target the messages better.

Don’t give up just yet! Tarot can feel vague at first but becomes clearer with more practice and dialogue with your reader.
